Muncie-Area Church Members Unite to Alleviate Burden of Loss with “GriefShare” – Muncie Journal

By K. Aleisha Fetters—

MUNCIE, Ind. — Mourning is a difficult journey. But this is the one that the members of the Muncie Church are increasingly walking together.

They do this through the aptly named GriefShare, a grief recovery support program that helps people in the United States, Canada and more than 10 other countries find meaning and rebuild their lives after loss. friends, family and loved ones.

“GriefShare provided me with a lifeline during my loss,” says Cheyrl McCoy, a former participant. “Sharing my story with others who could understand what I was going through was heartwarming. I was grateful for the support materials that offered relevant scriptures, videos, and lessons designed to help navigate the difficult path of grieving. My experience with GriefShare has helped me in the ongoing process of moving forward.

GriefShare arrived in Muncie over 20 years ago. And over the past few years, it has spread to serve hundreds of people. Currently, Commonway Church, First Brethren Church, First Church of the Nazarene, Grace Baptist Church, and The Jar Community Church all offer year-round GriefShare programming for everyone regardless of religious affiliation.

“It hurts to lose someone. Find help on GriefShare.

The basis of the GriefShare program lies in its 13-week courses. Each week, groups watch videos featuring expert interviews and real-life stories of loss and recovery. The groups then discuss the lessons from the video, what is happening in their lives, and the relationship between the two. People are free to share as little or as much as they like. Between sessions, GriefShare participants can also use their program notebooks for further reflection and a journal, which they have the opportunity to discuss in the following week’s session.

Designed to offer faith-based community, support, and practical guidance, these courses are led by people who understand. Many of them came to GriefShare after their own losses.

“I first came to Grief Share as a participant nine years ago after my husband passed away,” says Deb Rolli, host of Commonway Church GriefShare. “The healing I experienced and the community I found had such an impact on me that I became a leader of GriefShare. “

In addition to its 13-week courses, which take place throughout the year, GriefShare also offers one-off sessions aimed at meeting people at specific points in their grieving journey. Two of the most popular are Surviving the Vacation and Losing a Spouse.
