Lunch on the Lawn brings out the community | Worship

Despite the heat, church and community members came out for a bite to eat at Severns Valley Baptist Church.

Lunch on the Lawn was held Thursday with food sold from the 313 Flava Tyme food trailer.

The church has held the event every summer since spring 2019, which was the first spring at the church’s new location at the intersection of Patriot Parkway and Ring Road.

Pastor Andy Botts was there Thursday to preside over the day’s event which contained outdoor and indoor seating due to the heat.

Botts said they have redesigned and implemented various activities to allow the church to be more accessible and open to community members, including walking paths and a disc golf course. He said they wanted to make the land look more like a community park.

“We wanted to be a kind of green space for the community,” he said.

With that, they came up with the idea of Lunch on the Lawn by partnering with local businesses and food trucks to hang out and invite community members to check them out as well.

Botts said they usually have a food truck and a dessert truck. In the spring, the church also sells its coffee.

He also said church staff are on hand to speak with those who visit the church, including those who are unfamiliar.

“It gives people the opportunity to come and give us a chance to meet people from the community,” Botts said.

Rex Harrison is a member of the church and works at the Fort Knox Human Resource Command. He was there having lunch with some colleagues. Botts said Harrison is there almost every lawn lunch and brings others.

“The idea is to be a community church and to invite the community here, and I think that’s a great way to do that,” Harrison said.

Harrison said he has been attending the church since 2004. He said he invites his colleagues to the event every time and finds them excited when it is time for the next one.

“I just think these kinds of events are a great way to invite the community to see the Severns Valley, see what we have to offer and…spread the gospel,” Harrison said.

The next Lawn Lunches will be June 30, September 1-15, and October 13-27.
